Cowboy Cricket Farms, through use of the MBRCT grant, expanded product offerings to include higher Omega-3 Super Cricket Powder and Chocolate Chirp Cookies made from the powder. It increased its retailer base by over 150% since completion of the project and brought in partner farmers to increase supply. This has created jobs in the industry and additional jobs are projected in the next year.

Commercialization Introduction of Barley Protein Concentrate in Aquaculture Markets
Montana BioAgriculture received funding for these projects which resulted in a barley protein prototype plant. There were two project objectives: (1) process optimization and generate the design data for a commercial facility; and, (2) produce barley protein concentrate for commercial scale fish feeding trials. Clear Springs Foods has invested $2.1 million in the prototype plant facility and has started a major commercial test. Clear Springs is putting one of its trout farms on feed with the barley protein as the principle protein source. Results of this test will determine the inclusion rate of barley protein in trout feeds and its impact on commercial demand. The prototype plant is producing 30 to 40 tons of barley protein per month to feed 1.9 million trout from hatch to market weight. Clear Springs is purchasing the barley protein from the prototype plant at market rates. The prototype plant is located in Melrose and employs 6 people.

In drug discovery, as well as in basic research, measuring instantaneous cell signals presents difficult technical challenges. To overcome these challenges, Montana Molecular developed a series of fluorescent assay products to measure the signature of cell function, including cAMP, diacyl-glycerol, calcium, Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biophosphate (PIP2) and voltage, all of which are important indicators of drug activity.
The fluorescent signal comes from genes that encode red or green fluorescent proteins found in nature and snatched from the genomes of various fluorescent sea creatures. Montana Molecular engineers these genes to detect signals in living cells, including the cells that are involved in diseases, such as neurons, pancreatic islet cells and heart cells. When a drug that activates a cellular response is added, a change in fluorescence intensity can be easily measured with a microscope or fluorescence plate reader.
Funding from the MBRCT contributed to the development of the fluorescent assay products described here, and helped Montana Molecular attract additional funding to advance these technologies to market. These products are manufactured in Bozeman and shipped internationally to pharmaceutical and biotech companies as well as basic research labs in university and nonprofit institutions.

MEMS-Based Micro Zoom Lens for Cell Phone Cameras
Bridger Photonics, Bozeman, is a world leader in Precision LADAR, Precision LIDAR, and Advanced Imaging. The technology for its MFC Series MEMS Adjustable Focus Mirrors was developed under this MBRCT project. The mirrors are reflective optical elements with a voltage-selectable radius of curvature. The MFC Series can therefore be used to select the focal lengths for reflected light in optical systems.
Biological Treatment of Animal Wastes by Endophytic Fungi and "Mycofumigation"
EcoPlanet Environmental is a company located in Bozeman that utilizes a novel technology to treat animal wastes, especially household and barnyard animal wastes. The technology uses some of the chemical information obtained from discovery of Muscodor albus, an endophytic fungus that makes volatile antibiotics. The technology is a direct consequence of a previous MBRCT effort that discovered the fungus as a biological treatment for human and animal wastes. It is unique and has been shown to outperform competitors. EcoPlanet has many distributors of both CLOE and Barnyard animal waste treatment products, including Murdoch's and Shipton's Big R. Manufacturing of the products takes place at EcoPlanet's Belgrade facility.
Commercialization of BmJ as a Broad Spectrum Microbial Plant Disease Control Agent
BmJ was licensed to CERTIS USA in the spring of 2012 to develop and commercialize new plant disease control technologies. The reemergence of Potato Virus Y (PVY) in potato seed stock prompted the US EPA to grant a Section 18 Emergency Exemption to the Montana Department of Agriculture for use of BmJ to control PVY on up to 2,675 acres of seed potatoes. Manufactured by Certis USA, BmJ contains Bacillus mycoides isolate J, a bacterium discovered by Montana State University in collaboration with Montana BioAgriculture Inc. of Missoula. This bacterium has shown to trigger a plant's immune response to pathogenic fungi, bacteria and viruses. It has been tested nationwide with excellent results on pecans, tomato, potato and spinach. Products that can produce this response represent an advancement in the management of pests and plant diseases.
Research and Commercialization of the SepticNet Nutrient Removal Technology
Water & Environmental Technologies, PC (WET), Butte, received funding to research, develop, and commercialize a superior nutrient elimination technology for on-site septic systems resulting in a new commercial product called SepticNET and a new company called SepticNET, Inc. SepticNET is an innovative, modular septic treatment system designed for use with new home construction, as an upgrade to existing on-site septic systems, or as a complete small community wastewater treatment system. Since completion of the MBRCT project, SepticNET has received two patents and has gained Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) approval as a Level 2 wastewater treatment system. SepticNET is approved for an effluent total nitrogen concentration of <7.5 mg/L with no limitations on flow rates and no nitrate mixing zones. It is the only MDEQ approved technology capable of achieving that level of treatment for wastewater flows ranging from single family houses up to small communities. SepticNET is currently available in pre-designed residential and small community systems ranging from 500 gallons-per-day (gpd) to 10,000 gpd. SepticNET was invented, developed, tested and is currently being manufactured in Butte.
Sonographic Analysis for Rapid Detection of Varroa Mites and Other Pathologies without Opening the Beehive
Bee Alert Technology has brought the Honey Bee Acoustic Scanner to market and is selling the device for detection of bee diseases, mites, and other pests in bee colonies. The technology was initially developed for the United States Army for detection of honey bee colony exposure to toxic chemicals. Using USDA and MBRCT grants, the functionality was expanded for use in healthy bee management. The hand-held scanner has a low power, compact, single board, Linux ARM processor, with 8 to 32 GB of data storage, and ultrasonic audio capture capability. The same processor is being incorporated into Bee Alert's newest Smart Hive modules and is compatible with a wide variety of 5 to 12V sensors allowing for real-time, always on, monitoring of bee colony health. Plant and Food Research in New Zealand is a recent purchaser of the Honey Bee Acoustic Scanner.
