Industry Development Program
The Industry Development Program (IDP) works to identify and facilitate investment in projects that capitalize on the competitive and comparative business advantages Montana offers. Examples of our successes best represent what we do. Conceiving in a report prepared in 2014, then incubating over the next 6 years and finally seeing through construction, Montana Craft Malt’s $25 million, 10,000 ton per day malting facility in Butte is a great IDP success. IDP maximized the resources of multiple programs from state and federal agencies to assist the project resulting in a text-book economic development project showcased to the Montana legislature in 2019 as a model for success of the work of the Department of Commerce and other collaborating agencies. Consider another example. The decision by Pacific Corp to build the 240 MW, $400 million Prior Mountain wind farm in Carbon County came in part as the result of IDP efforts in 2016 and 2017 to lead several energy mission trips throughout neighboring states and provinces including a trip to the Salt Lake City offices of Rocky Mountain Power (a division of Pacific Corp), where we promoted Montana’s energy resources and encouraged the company to consider the Prior Mountain project. These two examples of IDP successes represent over half a billion dollars of investment into Montana’s economy adding value to the state’s natural resources, creating good paying jobs and bolstering the tax base.
